The Maldives Dive Tragedy Explained

When cave diving goes terribly wrong

The fallout from the horrible dive accident in the Maldives contnues. Today we learned that the divers likely got lost and could not find their way out and then ran out of air. This exact scenario is a well recognized risk of cave diving and is covered during training and certification. As it now appears, the doomed divers experienced multiple known complications of cave diving. These are explained in the excellent video below.

I am not here to criticize anyone. This is a tragedy. My goal is send a mesage to receational and would be SCUBA divers not to associate what happened in the Maldives with anything resembling receational diving. I know that some of you may now be having second thoughts about starting or continuing SCUBA diving. That’s what I want to mitigate. SCUBA diving is a wonderful form of recreation and is very safe. There are always risks but with proper training and techniques, diving is probably the most spectacular and ethereal experience you can have on planet earth.

My earlier posts about the Mldives tragedy.
